Brightline And Siemens: Speeding Toward The Future Of Train Travel

When Brightline needed a partner to build our innovative train-sets, the decision was easy. We chose to work with one of the country’s leading manufacturers of rail equipment, the company celebrated worldwide for their reliable rail technology: Siemens.
For over 30 years, Siemens has been manufacturing rail cars from its Sacramento, CA headquarters that set the industry’s standards for excellence. With their detail-oriented take on engineering, they have captured 60 to 70 percent of the U.S. light rail market. Brightline needed the best, and that is exactly what we got with Siemens.
Siemens is also committed to keeping jobs right here in the United States. Over 800 people work at the Sacramento facility with Siemens planning to hire 200 positions within the next 18 months. And not only will the entire train be built on American soil, but so will the majority of other components. Siemens has developed a robust and diverse base of U.S. rail suppliers to support the next-generation of rail manufacturing for Brightline including components from more than 40 suppliers in more than 20 states with additional suppliers still being added.
Right on Track
Work began on Brightline’s train-sets last year and the team just celebrated a major milestone as they completed the first passenger car shell. More than 70 employees at Siemens’ state-of-the-art manufacturing facility worked on building this 85-foot long first coach car, using more than 50,000 welds to fuse it together.
Siemens is employing first-of-its-kind spot-welding technology to build the stainless steel coach car shells and these coaches will be the only car-body with a flat sidewall of this type in the U.S. market. The completed coach shell will now go through a finishing process, preparing it for final assembly.
This coach shell is part of the first of Brightline’s initial five four-car train sets that will each carry 240 passengers with more train sets to follow as the service expands.

The Siemens team is working simultaneously on the first locomotive, which should come off the assembly line in May followed by testing.
