Brightline Begins New Year with MiamiCentral Milestone
January 6, 2017
First Signature V Columns Assembled
Brightline began 2017 with a major construction milestone at MiamiCentral, installing its first five signature V Columns along the East elevation. Constructed of steel and to be encased by precast concrete, these five V Columns are the first of 29 that will be installed, each reaching a staggering 70 feet tall. The steel for each one weighs 8,000 pounds!
Next month, once all the steel V Columns are constructed, they will be encased in concrete panels. Gate Precast of Kissimmee, Florida, has formed approximately 600 V-shaped precast concrete panels for the V Columns.
The V Columns provide a defining architectural element to all three of Brightline’s South Florida stations, which have been designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), one of the largest and most influential architecture, interior design, engineering, and urban planning firms in the world, in association with Zyscovich Architects, an integrated urban design, architecture, and interior design firm headquartered in downtown Miami.
At MiamiCentral, the Brightline train platform will be elevated to align with existing public transportation systems. This bold and innovative design allows thru-streets to remain open to traffic and creates an atmosphere of walkability as well as a landmark terminal.
Construction on Brightline’s stations and trains is progressing for a scheduled service launch in mid-2017, connecting Miami with Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. The first Brightline trainset was recently completed by Siemens and arrived in West Palm Beach. Brightline’s train stations in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach have been topped off and interior outfitting work is well underway.
Stay tuned to the Brightline blog for the latest progress updates. The future is looking bright for Brightline in 2017!
